Peloton ready to rumble

Spencerport, N.Y. — As the sport of Mixed Martial Arts grows into the most popular fighting sport internationally, it only makes sense that the wrestling hotbed of New York plays host to one of the premier MMA gyms in the state.

Peloton Martial Arts studio— run by Jiu-Jitsu instructor Paul Ferranti and Muay Thai instructor Mark Stutzman— has seen a recent spike in interest because of the new cultural phenomenon, the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The studio is a direct beneficiary from it’s location in NY’s top wrestling town.

“It’s just a natural transition for a lot of former wrestlers,” Ferranti said. “We get a lot of guys, living in this town, that want to continue to compete when they’re done wrestling.”

The Muay Thai element of the sport along with the submission based art of Jiu-Jitsu refines the grapplers’ arsenals. Muay Thai is the stand-up, kickboxing facet that MMA’s best “strikers” utilize in the cage.

“MMA is pretty mainstream right now because it’s getting more popular,” said Stutzman, who has been training fighters in the art since 2002. “Muay Thai completes the fighter who already knows how to wrestle and do some Jiu-Jitsu.”

Former Greece Olympia and University of Virginia wrestler, Don Carlo-Clauss, is one athlete that came to MMA following a successful collegiate career. He has been fighting professionally for two years and recently turned his pastime into a full-time gig.

“I just decided that I didn’t want to stop competing,” he said. “At first it was just a good way to keep in shape but then I started doing it for my full-time job and now I’m a professional.”

With a 6-2 overall record in eight pro fights, the 29-year-old Carlo-Clauss is one of three professional fighters that train at Peloton. Another former high school and college wrestler, Casey Lamb of Canandaigua, has competed in sanctioned professional fights and UFC enthusiast Colin Schrader was scheduled for a bout earlier this year, before his opponent failed to make weight.

“I’ll probably get a fight in September,” Schrader said. “I was ready to go but then I got a call from my manager and he told me that the guy I was supposed to fight passed out trying to make weight.

“I’ve had a couple of amateur fights since but I’m very anxious for my first pro fight.”

Schrader became interested in the sport when UFC exploded on the scene a few years ago. After some time as an avid fan of league, he decided that he wanted to try his hand at the craft.

He came to Peloton because Ferranti was one of the few Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors in the area.
“Most of the professional fighters were from Brazil and knew Jiu-Jitsu so I decided that’s what I needed to do,” Schrader explained. “I would like to take this as far as I can. I’ve trained with high-level fighters and this program is definitely right up there with them.”

Lamb— a Victor grad who wrestled for Boise State and Cornell— used Peloton as an outlet after several unfortunate incidents that led to a small bout of depression and obesity.
Following the death of his infant son from a staff infection, Lamb took it out on his body— overeating and drinking— to the point that he was 335-pounds. The weight gain coupled with his desire to compete again led him to the Spencerport MMA studio where he now fights at 205-pounds.

“I would watch UFC fights on T.V. and think to myself, ‘I could take that guy,’” he said. “I left a lot of things undone and after my first son died I got into a little funk— MMA helped me get back.”

Ferranti and the rest of the Peloton instructors constantly dispel the notion that MMA is a sport for barbarians and miscreants. In reality the matches are more strategy-based and, because there are several ways to win, MMA is arguably more complex than other fighting sports such as boxing.

“It’s not just a bunch of meat heads beating each other to a pulp,” said Ferranti who received his instructor certification after years of competing in Jiu-Jitsu. “Once people start to really watch the UFC more and get to know the rules a little bit more, I think that they will see that.”

Lamb concurred and feels that the sport has taken large strides since UFC 1, which was much rawer and resembled a bar-room brawl. Now there is a much thicker rulebook and stauncher guidelines to stopping fights early and avoiding serious injury.

“My first fight lasted 51 seconds and I didn’t know if I could hit somebody in the face full out,” he said. “Once I got in there, I realized that I could, but I don’t fight with animosity or with the anger to kill somebody.

“I view it more like a chess-match and a competition rather than a human cockfight, which is what it used to be like.”

Carlos-Clauss— who lost his most recent bout in Massachusetts by decision— noted that there is even a specific, very cerebral, way to train. Before fights, the athletes ramp up their regimens to prepare for the rigors of cage-fighting.

He generally goes through an eight-week training camp to prepare his body and mind for a bout.
“You can’t just go crazy the whole time you have to be smart about it,” he said. “Coaches plan the workouts accordingly so that you’re peaking at the right time for the fight.”

It is currently illegal to hold sanctioned MMA events in New York state, but it appears that fights could be approved as early as 2010. Ferranti believes that Peloton will continue to see growth as mixed-martial arts becomes ingrained in popular culture.

“I think when parents see that the sport is legal in the state they’ll be more willing to bring their kids to the gym,” he said. “I think the sky’s the limit for this sport.”

Master Helio Gracie passes 1/29/09

It is with great sadness and loss that Peloton Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu announces the passing of Grandmaster Helio Gracie.
At 95 years of age, the great icon and one of those most responsible for Jiu-Jitsu's success in Brazil and the world died this morning, at Beneficencia Portuguesa Hospital, in Petropolis, mountain region of Rio de Janeiro.
"I created a flag from the sport's dignity. I oversee the name of my family with affection and nerves of blood," said the Professor, as his last worlds.
The Master will be buried this Thursday afternoon, at 5 pm, at the Chapel of the Petropolis municipal cemetery.
Helio Gracie's last public appearance occurred in December of last year, during a belt-promotion ceremony held by Gracie Humaita at the Guanabara Yacht Club.

In October, Helio Gracie celebrated his 95th birthday at the Gracie Humaita academy, in Rio de Janeiro.
In one of his most famous interviews, published in the special 100th issue of GRACIEMAG, the professor had declared: "I've already told my sons that when I die I want there to be a party. No drinking, no debauchery."
We all are in mourning and express our condolences and sadness to the family, his wife Vera, sons Rorion, Relson, Rickson, Rolker, Royler, Royce, Rherica, Robin and Ricci.

Danny was a bit nervous during the gi portion of the tournament, but showed some true grit and heart in the No-Gi by coming back and beating the opponent that had beat him twice before to win by triangle in his 1st, and armlock in the 2nd!!.

Libby fought a much bigger opponent in the gi portion and controlled the pace of the match throughout, after initiating the takedown her opponent was awarded the point!???.. in the Gi she was paired against a solid grappler from CNY-MMA and dominated the match from start to finish!. Great job!

Nick had a great showing but just ran out of gas.

Collin Schrader- 2nd place No-Gi and 2nd Gi
In Gi Collin got slammed which according to the 'Rules of this event' should have been an automatic DQ, but instead his opponent was awarded a point!!, this set the tone for this match that eventually led to a 1 point decision. @#$%.....!!!!
In No-Gi Collin fought well but in his third match took a nasty takedown as he tried to lock-in a guillotine, his back got worked on by some cool Canadians..
Thanks Ehhh!!, which put Collin back in the running.
He went on to the finals, but his back just wouldn't allow him to finish the numerous triangle and submission attempts on this opponent, eventually losing to a takedown.
Not being able to defend his overall title this time will surely lite a fire in Collin's @#$@!!, so hope to see you all at Joslin's!!

Men's Adv.Gi 165-175

Josh did awesome!, won all his matches by submission all the way to the Gi absolute finals, in the finals he gave up 40+ lbs to a game opponent from

World class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Spencerport New York?

These days martial arts are becoming very ubiquitous. Everywhere you go one can see outlandish advertisements and guarantees, for the best self-defense system. Many of these guarantees are untrue and an expensive waste of time. There is one martial art that has proved its effectiveness time and time again, one martial art that gives the smaller person a real chance to defend himself or herself against a much larger opponent. This martial art is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or simply BJJ, and the best place to learn this art in Western NY is at the Peloton Martial Arts Academy.
BJJ has a very rich history. The martial art started in Japan and then was brought to Brazil in the 20th century. A Japanese man taught this martial art to the Gracie family. The Gracie family then modified it and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was born.
BJJ is a ground fighting system. The theory is simple, take the fight to the ground, then gain an advantageous position, and finally put your opponent into a submission hold, where your opponent is forced to quit or suffer major injury. BJJ gives a smaller man or woman the best chance to beat a much larger opponent because all of the moves are technique based, not strength based.
Moreover, there is no striking, eye gouges, groin kicks, etc. At first a person might wonder why these techniques have been excluded from BJJ. The answer is that when these techniques are removed from training students can spar safely at full force on a daily basis. Consequently, when a student has to use BJJ in a real world situation they are already accustomed to a fully resisting opponent and have a major advantage.
BJJ classes start off with some stretching followed by some specific drills (hip escapes, bear crawls, front rolls, back rolls, etc. etc. . After the warm up, techniques are taught, and finally the live sparring. Classes are very informal, the bowing at the beginning of the class is a courtesy to the ‘Tatame’(training facility), instructors, as well as fellow students. This creates a very fun and friendly atmosphere to train in. Perhaps the most important thing about any school are the instructors. This is why Peloton is a cut above the rest. Paul Ferranti and Bryan Spinosa are two excellent instructors. Paul is the only BJJ Black Belt in the Rochester area with direct links back to Brazil.
His instructor and head instructor of the association is Prof. Alexandre "Grandao" Dos Santos Dantas, a three time BJJ World Champion. Nowhere else in Rochester will you find teachers with direct linaege back to Brazilian World Champions.
Some people may associate BJJ with the new popular sport of Mixed Martial Arts. Images of cages and blood spattered athletes may turn some people off to BJJ. While it is true that no MMA athlete would be a complete fighter without BJJ training, traditional BJJ for self-defense and personal fitness, and MMA training are very different. Peloton offers both to their students.
My personal experience with BJJ and Peloton Martial arts has been such a positive experience that I try and recommended it to everyone I meet. Through BJJ training I have gotten in great shape and learned how to defend myself in a fight if I ever have too. I have made life long friends and gained a second family. For me BJJ is a great escape from the daily stress of life. During training time I am not thinking about bills, my children, my job, my spouse, etc. I am only thinking about how to win my match.
If you have ever thought about taking a martial arts class, or you are just looking to get in shape and are bored at your fitness center, I would highly recommend stopping down to Peloton Martial Arts Center and try a class out.

2008 Rochester Grappling Tournament - Team Champions!

Team Champions 2 Years running

Get out the broom - this division was swept by Team Peloton.

Team Peloton attended the Rochester Grappling Tournament on June 8 and came away with some big hardware. Team Peloton repeated their feat of last year by taking home the team trophy with 7 first place finishes!

Here some of the results:

Austin Lamb – 4th place Children’s Gi – Austin competed with much older kids in his division and managed to put on a clinic in the first round of his first match. Had points been scored in the first round he would have been up by as much as 15 – 0 as he mounted/knee on belly at will. In the second round he gave up a takedown and got caught in a headlock/choke. Nice work Austin, much to look forward to.

Casey Lamb – 1st gi and 1st No gi – Surprise, Surprise - The usual… unstoppable takedowns, dominant positions, etc. A demolition from start to finish. 5 fights = 5 submission victories. It’s a good problem to have when your biggest concern is trying to win by choke instead of armbar. After 3 armbar wins Casey changed up to 2 chokes to finish the day off.

Josh Brongo – 1st Gi (Peloton sweeps the division – Josh gets 1st because his victory en route to the finals was by submission.) 3rd no gi (due to injury) Josh was a crowd pleaser in Gi when he landed a beautiful rolling lapel choke in his first match. In no gi Josh and teammate Eric battled each other and one other opponent in a small division. After one full round robin each competitor had one once and lost once. Because Josh was the only one to finish his match by submission (triangle over Eric) he should have been awarded the division. For some reason the tournament folks didn’t recognize that???? and had them all fight again. In the rematch bracket Josh’s game opponent was saved by the bell from a straight knee bar to end round 1 and then Josh blew his back out as his opponent struggled to escape Josh’s triangle in round 2. Losing on points, Josh was done for the day with his injury. Great heart Broda! Read more on Eric’s battle for 1st/2nd….

Eric – 1st no gi/did not compete Gi. With a limited background on submissions and competing in his first submission tournament, Eric was simply outstanding. Eric’s takedowns were unstoppable and his takedown defense was 100% effective. He went on to avenge Josh’s loss/injury by beating the opposing player from a different school for a second time in the rematch battle and capturing 1st place.

Don Carlo – 2nd or 3rd Gi/1st no gi - Don had an impressive debut for Peloton. He was part of the sweep of his gi division with Josh and Chris Harrington. He will battle Chris for 2nd/3rd in an exclusive dojo match. In no gi Don shined with impressive takedowns and a top game.

Steve Georger – 3rd gi / 2nd no gi – In another impressive debut performance for Peloton Steve, Josh’s cousin, fought well in all his matches and was thrown in against some bigger competitors due to small divisions for his weight class. Some more submission work combined with Steve’s stellar wrestling should equate to a bright future.

Chris Harrington - 2nd or 3rd Gi /1st no gi – Competing in his first submission tournament…. Can you say Brabo? Chris finished all of his opponents with slick brabo chokes set up from his solid Greco background. It was a showcase. Great job.

Donny DiManno – 1st Gi/Did not compete no gi – Donny gave up 20 lbs to his final opponent due to a small division and still managed the victory on points. Way to go Donny.

Corey – 4th Gi/4th No Gi In his submission debut, Corey fought some outstanding battles. He put up some tremendous fights and almost beat those who would eventually win his divisions. Had points been awarded in the first rounds, some very different outcomes may have played out against guys who had 2+ years of training vs Corey’s two weeks.

For the second straight year Peloton takes home the overall team trophy despite fielding fewer guys than the next best team. That’s an impressive win/loss ratio per competitor! With so many new guys competing and so many regular competitors unable to attend made the team victory even more meaningful. Casey, Josh and Donny, the wiley vetrans, were great leaders and all the new guys stepped it up.

The most exciting news any program can announce is a promotion to blackbelt. On June 11, 2008 on a visit to Brazil, Paul Ferranti received his blackbelt from longtime instructor and mentor, Professor Alexandre "Grandao" Dos Santos Dantas. With great pride Grandao, a 3rd degree blackbelt under Prof. Castello Branco, removed his own blackbelt and tied it around Paul's waist. Nick Morabito was there to catch the cool shots below.

The entire academy shares in Grandao's pride with Paul's promotion. It has been a long time coming and all of Paul's students who learn from him and roll with him know it is very well deserved!

Congrats Paul on this incredible achievement. Your leadership has reached new levels.

SRJJA's Rafael Lovato, Jr. who is a current World champion and defending Pan-American champion, repeated his success today as he won the heavyweight title by defeating Robert Tussa Alencar of Gracie Barra in the finals. In what is being considered the best match of the day, the Oklahoma native swept and took the back of Alencar. The sweep (2 points) and back (4 points) guaranteed him the gold with the 6-0 victory. Congrats Rafael!!!

First Look: Chiwetel Ejiofor in David Mamet's Redbelt

Ever since I saw Serenity for the very first time, I've been amazed by Chiwetel Ejiofor. He's an incredibly capable actor full of talent but has never really been allowed to show his full potential. He was great in Children of Men and Talk to Me and was one of the finer aspects of American Gangster, but he still hasn't had his big break. One of his upcoming films is Redbelt, written and directed by Oscar nominated longtime screenwriter David Mamet of State and Main, Heist, and Spartan. In Redbelt, Ejiofor plays Mike Terry, a mixed-martial arts instructor who refuses to compete in professional fights but instead trains students in the art of self-defense.

Instead he trains dedicated students in the art of self-defense: bodyguards, cops, soldiers. At his brother-in-law's club one evening, Mike saves a famous action star, Chet Frank, (Tim Allen) from a severe beating. His defense of Frank leads to a job in the film industry, but other events conspire to force Mike to participate in a prize fight. An American samurai film set in the world of mixed martial arts, Redbelt is a story about the limits of a single man's integrity. Alice Braga, Emily Mortimer, Rodrigo Santoro, Rebecca Pidgeon and Randy Couture co-star.

However, IMDb say it's not a comedy, which is the first thing that pops in my mind when I hear of Tim Allen. To all Peloton students:

I would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding concerning all of last year's events.

I finally went under the knife this past week, and feel much better already.

I had lost almost all feeling in the last two digits of my right hand and after taking so many meds for so long I had forgotten what it was like to feel wide awake again.

I am looking forward to the next 6-8 weeks and rehabilitation, and getting back to normal soon.

Paul was gracious in extending me an invite to view some behind the scenes action at the studio, needless to say it was awesome, Thanks Paul!.

After dinner I had a chance to bring the guys back to Peloton, these guys are huge goof-offs!!, can't wait until Paul brings them back!!.

Definitely buy the next series!!, you won't be disappointed.

Ryan Hill fought really well, dominated the entire round but got reversed in the final minutes of the match and lost by a slim margin.

Nick Morabito-2nd Place
Nick's division was stacked, 37 competitors!!. Nick fought six matches, he dominated all six and finally got caught with an armlock in his final match.
I can't say enough about Morabito...aka "Meredith", he rocked the house!!

155-169.9 Beg/Gi and No-gi
Mike Montes- at 18yrs.old and 6'2 Mike is got huge potential in this division!!, he fought grown men that are definately not beginners, never the less did awesome!!.
Mikey really wanted to bring back the championship belt this year and trained really hard, he had a match-up in the No-Gi that made us all laugh, his opponent wore colored underwear for the match!!, even the officials had a chuckle!!.
Really nice job Mikey!!

Shaun Hahn- was at the bottom of this class as far as weigh-ins are concerned, he fought well winning his first match by triangle submission!!, his second match he drew a huge dude and just couldn't defend the strength advantage.
Shaun also suffered a bad eye injury, totally acidental by the way, we wish him a quick and smooth recovery. Great job Shaun!!

170-184.9lbs Int/Gi
Brandon Ince- lost his first match by 2 points, he fought great and showed some impressive skills.
Great job!!.

Josh Brongo- won his first match with a traingle choke, and lost his second match by 2 points. This was a questionable call since he initiated and got the takedown?, he got sweapt immediately after but it should have been tied 2-2.
Great job, Lawnmowerman!!

Collin Schrader- won his first match by triangle choke, his set-up was awesome!!. in his second match we saw at least 2 sweeps that were not scored!!, we were really dissapointed with the officiating a this point.

"Doc" Evans flew out from Arizona to compete for his hometown team!!, he fought up a class!!. Doc lost his first match on points, but later told me " I wasn't gonna tap", you showed a huge heart Doc!!.

Casey Lamb aka the "JUGGERNUT", 1st place Gi/NoGi, Casey continues to smash the competition!!. He won all his matches by submission!!
He fought some great guys in his division, nice work Casey!!

We had about 20 in attendance, he made everyone feel as though they were receiving a private.

He demonstrated some of his favorite techniques and showed some incredible details.

SRJJA Annual Tournament 2007

Peloton made the trip out to Toledo-Ohio to visit all the association members and compete in the annual SRJJA this past weekend.
Saulo and Xande made everyone feel welcome and gave us the updates on the University of Jiu Jitsu in Cali.
The turnout was awesome, 16+ association schools, and tons of talented JJ players.
Amongst the attendees were current SH Mundial Champ-Rafael Lovato Jr., Regis Lebre, Shaun Bansfield, and Chris Blanke hosting the event.
Next year the event will move to a new and larger venue.

Fought Tau Falualo from Hawaii, Casey won the fight in outstanding fashion, in 51 sec. of the first round.
Tau was taken down with a single leg takedown, had his guard passed to knee on belly, took a ton of damage from that position. Got mounted and received devastating strikes to the face at which point the ref. stopped the fight.

George Collichio- had a great showing, he lost a close match by points to the eventual class winner. Great job!!

Sam Spinosa- he won his first 3 matches!!, and showed off his wrestling and BJJ at this tournament eventually getting to the semi-finals. He lost his 4th match after getting sick during his match. Great job!!
Next time just let it out!!

Adults:
Colin Schrader- 185 Beg-Gi Winner!!, and put on a heck of a show!!. Fantastic job!!.
His class had 32 entries, Colin showed off his awesome technique ... very impressive!!. In his semi-final match, he beat a solid blue belt by advantage really pressuring and controlling the pace and almost submitting him by triangle choke.
His final match was unreal, his opponent did not want to risk falling into Colin's guard so he pulled guard himself. Colin passed and pressured the whole match, winning 8x0.
You might see Colin at local Walmart's ala Tim Silvia wearing his Championship belt around!!

Rich Williams- this kid did fantastic, with only a month of BJJ training under his belt he placed second in the 205 Beg-Gi division and put on a wrestling clinic in the process. Great job!!

Casey Lamb- Int/Adv Heavy(220+ division) Gi/No-Gi Winner!!
This weight division was in for a long day!!, Casey punished these guys!!
At 230lbs., he ran through this class. After winning his 1st match against a huge 260+ Tai-Kai student 39x0, all eyes were on this guy.
3 matches later he was in the finals and more of the same...in the No/Gi his takedowns were showcased and again more punishment, he won his last 2 matches by rear/naked choke after scoring tons of takedowns and passing, mounting, taking the back, etc. etc..
Great job!!

Josh Brongo- (165 Int-Gi) we can't say enough about this guy!!, he lost his step-mother a day before the tournament and still competed. Huge heart!!
He won his first match via reverse/omoplata, and lost his second by triangle choke to a tough guy.
Our prayers are with you and your family brother!!

Josh did incredible!!.
He won his first 2 matches, and lost his 3rd to a solid purple belt.
Colin Schrader- (whitebelt 3rd degree) 3rd place Beginner Gi/ No-Gi welterweight.
Colin did outstanding and by all accounts should've won his division in No-Gi!!, he finished the bracket with 4 submissions!!.
Due to some questionable calls though ended up receiving 3rd.

Charlie did awesome, he had some great submission attempts and made us all proud.

Martial Art's Emphasis On Leverage Gives Petite Reporter a Fighting Chance

For the men at Pelotôn Martial Arts Center, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than a martial art — it's a way of life. Besides rigorously training their bodies, they have, in some ways, transformed their minds.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting."It's a gentle art," said Bryan Spinosa, 39, co-owner of Pelotôn. "It's not dependent on striking and cutting and hurting and kicking" but rather "leverage and manipulations of the body."

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is also based on the idea that a smaller, weaker person can use leverage to defend himself or herself against a bigger, stronger assailant. Since I was in a room full of bigger, stronger men, that point seemed important.

The class began with calisthenics. We ran, flipped, snaked, gave piggybacks and slithered across the mats. I didn't do all of these things, as I couldn't keep up. And I was hot. The gi, or heavy training jacket, I was wearing made me drip with sweat.

Still sweaty, we hit the mats and worked our abs. This haunted me for three days afterward each time I laughed, sneezed or moved a certain way."Some people come in and it's just a hobby; they want to get in shape," said Paul Ferranti, 34, co-owner of Pelotôn. "We (Paul and Bryan) are hobbyists. We don't do this as a full-time job, but we really enjoy it."

Mark Stutzman, a "martial artist at heart," has been studying at Pelotôn for nearly a year."I love the martial arts, and basically I want to learn everything so you know how to defend yourself against everything else," said the 31-year-old Fairport resident. "You can't just study one thing and expect to be a complete fighter; you have to learn all aspects — striking as well as the ground game."

I'm not a fighter, let alone an aggressive person. Nonetheless, feeling toned and agile are things I appreciate.After warm-ups we went into ground work, where I learned an upa — an important maneuver if you're ever trapped on your back. You bridge your back by lifting your hips off the ground, roll out from under your attacker and mount him or her. This puts you in a dominant position.

This was pretty hard for me, considering that everyone else knew what they were doing, but it taught me that with practice, I could get pretty good. I also think I'd learn quicker if I could first hone my skills on other women before working with men. (Paul and Bryan said if enough women were interested, they'd teach a class.)

After attempting a few more moves I sat out and watched. Jason Goldwasser, 25, of Henrietta, sidelined with a back injury, watched with me. A kind, calm man, Jason became interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a few years ago to learn the ground game, something he wasn't learning in his other martial arts classes.

"Now ... I can get up from the ground," he said, "I can control someone on the ground."
